Why custom fit?
Because a dog's paw is not a size — it's a shape.
Paws vary more between breeds than feet do between people, and a dog's front paws aren't shaped like their back ones. A chart of S/M/L can't hold that. Measuring each paw can.
The sizing gap
One dog size has to stretch a very long way.
Both bars below are the same width — each shows the full spread of foot or paw sizes that exists. The blocks are how many sizes you actually get to cover that spread.

Dog paws span 13× more variation than human feet, with about half as many sizes to cover it. Every block on the second bar is doing enormously more work — which is why off-the-shelf dog shoes so rarely fit.

Front paws are wider and shorter than back ones. One size for all four means two wrong fits.
